The Phaedo presents Socrates’ final conversation. What will become of him once he drinks the poison prescribed for his execution? Socrates and his friends examine several arguments intended to prove that the death of the body does not result in killing the soul. But, as is often the case in Plato’s dialogues, this work is not only about the immortality of the soul, it is one of the dialogues in which Plato presents the so-called “theory of forms,” a way of explaining what all instances of knowing and being have in common. Although Socrates is the central character in Plato’s Phaedo, Simmias and Cebes introduce conflicting ideas from the Pythagorean tradition. The question of the immotrality of the soul cannot be separated from the issue of the nature of the soul. All of those aspects of this dialogue need careful analysis and evaluation.
