HENRI BERGSON, INTRODUCTION TO METAPHYSICS
Bergson's Introduction to Metaphysics offers a way of thinking about reality that recognizes process and change and also seeks what is permanent. How can we reconcile those seemingly contradictory ideas? Similar to the ancient Greek philosophers, Bergson struggled with that challenge and brought it into the modern era. At first it seems that his emphasis on process unites him with Heraclitus who is best known for the poetic image of a river into which we cannot step twice. However, Bergson seeks what is permanent by knowing from the inside rather than focusing on external perspectives that, thanks to science and technology, have alienated us rather than revealing our place in the natural world. Bergson shows that we are inseparable from that river, allowing us to flow along with it and delight in the journey.
